Mike Tyson Editorial

Created: Spring 2018

This project is a Rolling Stone editorial spread which includes a magazine cover. Rolling Stone is an American biweekly magazine that focuses on popular culture.

This editorial revisits the 1989 Mike Tyson interview conducted by Hal Conrad, a boxing promoter for championship fights and one of the founders of the Boxing Writers Association. The article gives some insight of the champion’s relationship with Cus D’Amato, his trainer and adopted father. The interview also shines a light on Tyson’s knowledge of boxing history and its figures.

Because of the insightful information, I did not want to create a competition between the magazine layout and the interview. Creating a balance resulted in the magazine having a clean and contemporary feel.

Choosing Mike Tyson as the topic was the first step of the process. After reading several Mike Tyson interviews, I chose the one that showed off the qualities not typically seen. The magazine grid structure and images helped create a relationship between form and content so that there is no imbalance between the two. The images I chose show Mike Tyson primarily in isolation because boxers are in the ring by themselves. Helvetica was the typeface chosen because of the number of family members it has. Having a variety of similar fonts helps create a hierarchy throughout the editorial when needed. The cover page’s lettering influenced the creation of a typeface I created name Grand which was made especially for masking images.
